Coweta Masonic Lodge No. 60 was chartered on October 26, 1847 in Newnan, GA. Worshipful Brother Batty H. Mitchell served as the lodge’s first Worshipful Master. It is one of the oldest lodges in Georgia and is the oldest surviving lodge in Coweta County. The lodge was originally located on Greenville Street in the “Downtown Historic District” of Newnan. During the mid 1970’s the lodge chose to donate their building and property to a local church and build a new lodge on Sewell Road. The land was donated by a local dentist, Dr. Sewell, who was also a lodge member at Coweta 60. The members moved into the new building in 1976 and this is where the lodge still meets today.
Coweta Masonic Lodge No. 60 proudly recognizes several distinguished members from our lodge and community:
- William Yates Atkinson, Governor of Georgia (1894-1898).
- Ellis Gibbs Arnall, Governor of Georgia (1943-1947).
- Col. Joe Madison Jackson, USAF, Ret., Medal of Honor recipient (1969).
